Poor puppy has a hot spot he needs to be prevented from chewing

Poor Toohey got a hot spot near the base of his tail and managed to pull all his fur out/break the skin. Sadly that means time to break out the cone to keep him from being able to reach it. He looks so pitiful! Though it is funny to watch him still try to pick up a tennis ball when he wants to/tries to play!

Liquid Expedition: Newps

Got in the water for the first time with the new housing from Del Mar Hosing Projects.

Awesome.

Despite a little condensation inside the housing/lens port, and taking more than a few waves to the head, still got some great shots.  (Definitely user-error on the condensation, not manufacturing...was so excited to jump in the water I not only forgot my fins but forgot to properly switch to multi-shot from single, so had to open up/change settings after already having been in the cold water, then of course didn't wait long enough for temps to equalize before going back in, so the warmer air condensed inside the housing...oops).

Social Media and Android

Amazingly, there ia no easy way to update fb fan pages with photos from a mobile device. iPhones can...but even the fb app for android doesnt let you. So how to do it?

There are always options such as ping.fm to update everything on-mass using such apps as pingdroid or anypost, but even so, no photo updates to fb with photos. We've found that setting up custom posting groups on ping.fm allow us to post closely to what we want. Custom groups on anypost seem to error out.

But what do we mean when we say "closely to what we want?"

It all comes back to facebook fan pages and the inability to post images on our android phones. We can use pingdroid to post text updates to all our social media sites, so we've created a posting group for just that. We can post status updates/mini-blogs with photos to everything but fb, so that gets a posting group too. Then of course there are full length blogs; that excludes fb and twitter, so we've created another posting group for this too. The annoying thing is that we have to separately post pictures to fb via email. As of now there is nothing for android that does it all in one fell swoop.

But hey, at least we've finally found a way. So definitely be on the lookout for new and exciting postings!

Huntington Beach remembers Andi Irons

Surfers and surf fans alike gathered at the huntington beach pier to remember Andi Irons, the former 3x asp world champ. Irons, 32, tragically passed while traveling from puerto rico to his home in hawaii after pulling out of a contest due to illness. Well over 1000 people attended a memorial for the former champ, which culminated in a traditional paddle out at the end of the hb pier.

Around the same time Kelly Slater secured his record 10th world title, dedicating his win to his staunchest rival and friend, AI.

RIP Andy Irons. Without question on of surfing's greatest athletes and competitors.

Follow the Light

As the lensman for Driftwood Photography Studios, I’ve been working really hard lately on an entry submission for an upcoming grant aimed at surf photography/surf photographers.

It’s through the Follow the Light Foundation, which was started in memory of renowned/pioneering surf photographer Larry “Flame” Moore.  Winner gets a nice chunk of cash to be put towards furthering your photography career, in whatever way the winner thinks will best benefit them.  Pretty great!

This year’s entry took a variation from previous years…instead of a straight image and essay entry, entrants had to create a slideshow to music.  Here is a slightly tweaked version of the slideshow/images I used in my entry, which I sent out this past Monday (5/17/2010).  Finalists are announced towards the end of June, and the winner is announced at the 2010 US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach this August.

Hope you enjoy, and wish me luck!

Tips and Tricks for Portraits

Have a portrait session scheduled?  Here are some tips and tricks from Driftwood Photography Studios to help ensure you get the finished pictures you're after:

PICK YOUR SETTING
  • Indoors (at a studio, your home, etc.)
  • Beach shots, and/or sunset shots
  • Rocky cliff shots
  • Lush green scenes (whether it be in a lush garden with flowers and green, or a simpler, more close-cropped tropical leaf background)
  • Snow/winter scene
  • A place of special meaning
THINGS KEEP IN MIND FOR PORTRAIT SESSIONS:
  • If you want to have a haircut, best to get it 1-week before the shoot date.
  • Choose outfits carefully/according to settings, as lightest, brightest color in the picture will be the immediate focal point.
  • The goal is to have your faces pop and be the focal point, not the clothing.
  • Chose a setting/style that fits you and your family (darker tends to be more formal/serious, lighter/brighter being more playful/easygoing)
-If a darker location/darker background, chose darker tone clothing.
-If lighter/brighter location, neutral tone clothing works best.
  • Dress everyone in similar colors/tones otherwise it will look like a random collection of people rather than a group/family.
  • Especially with women, if there is a mixture of light and dark clothing, it can actually make the women look heavier, just because of the added intensity/focus the overall lighter clothing contrast puts on the entire person when viewing the finished photo.
  • Unless doing close-up headshot type photos (shoulder and higher), it is best to wear long sleeves, stockings if dress/skirt that are darker than your flesh tone, etc as the exposed skin or lighter stockings will take the focal point away from faces and to that lighter color in the picture, which also can make arms or legs look bigger than they are.
  • Don't wear over exaggerated v-necks, tops with a exaggeratedly low cleavage line (as much as guys like it, it is what becomes the focal point of the entire photo), or turtle necks that bunch up around the neck and cover the entire neckline up to the chin.
  • Shoes, stockings, socks, etc. should match with the overall outfit; in the event that the photographer takes full body shots you want to ensure that un-matching elements don't also detract from the overall composition.
Please call, text, or email us to arrange a meeting, view more samples, or schedule a photo session/shoot.  We will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
